Year of Words Book Challenge: Week 1

It’s here! It’s here! I’ve been waiting for this day since this big idea popped into my head. Today is the first day, of the first week, of the Year of Words! woo hoo!!

If you aren’t familiar with a Year of Words you can get all the info here. Otherwise, let’s just jump right in!

Word of the week:

Week 1: Year of Words

One of my favorite words. I’m so excited we are beginning here.

Create can mean so many things, and something different to anyone/everyone you ask. It’s really one of my very favorite things about words. It’s one word, but to me it is one thing, and to you it’s another. That’s why I think this challenge is so special. My challenge is about me. Your challenge is about you, and we’re using the same words. 🙂

I mentioned in a previous post, my word of the year is Embody. I really want to dive in and begin to embody the practices, themes, and words my life revolves around. One of the best ways I know to do that is to read about someone else who is already doing it. I have spent the last couple years reading books about HOW to do things, now I want to see it being done. I want to be in the middle of stories about people living what I’m trying to do.

I imagine, with this in mind, many of my books will be memoirs, biographies, and even fiction. (it’s also pretty awesome that I love to read these kinds of books 😉 ). But I’m sure my journey is not your journey, so read the books that relate to the word in the way that works for what you’re doing.

I will provide a few book recommendations, probably a personal development book, a memoir, and a work of fiction to go with each word, each week. I’d LOVE to hear what you’ve chosen to read. You can share in the comments, or come and let’s have a conversation about it in my group!

I’ve also made some goodies to go along with each week, which will be available to group members, and people in my email community. You can join the email community by filling in your details here:

Ok, now that the logistics are out of the way, let’s get started!!

Book recommendations for Create:

Big Magic. This is the first book that popped into my head when I saw the word Create. I did just read it a couple months ago ~ but if I have time I’ll read it again. One of the BEST books for creative folks I’ve ever read… writers in particular. (my Big Magic Review)

Ready Set Breathe ~ if you want to create a mindful environment in your home, and with your kids. True story: I’ve been wanting to read this book for a long time, but just haven’t gotten around to it. It randomly, I did NOT order it, showed up in my mailbox this weekend! Universe, I can take a hint… I’m also reading this now. 🙂

Pioneer Woman Cooks ~ Dinnertime ~ if you want to create some amazing meals. This almost reads more like a story than a cookbook, and the recipes are fantastic and things my “normal” family will eat. (Hanna got it for me for Christmas!)

Not Quite What I Was Planning and other Six Word Memoirs. I had actually planned to read this book this week. I love the idea of creating a six word memoir, and reading the ones other people have already done.

What I’m reading this week for Create:

Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed Pop Culture I am not interested in video games. I don’t play them, heck I don’t even like them, but when I saw this book and the reviews I was sold. Two insanely creative people get together, fight the odds, and create something that transforms an entire culture. Yeah. I’m all about that. 🙂 I’ve already started it, and it’s pretty good so far. Stay tuned on Friday I’ll share my full review.

Movies to Go with Create:

Yeah, I know it’s a book challenge, but I saw this post the other day on Facebook about 15 movies related to creativity and was like, “Hello Universe, thanks for the heads up!”

15 Netflix movies that will help you beat a creativity slump

I’d also add Jiro Dreams of Sushi to that list. It’s also on Netflix and is one of my all time favorite documentaries. It is all about the word create in all its various forms. It’s also about a bunch of other words, so don’t be surprised if you see it on upcoming lists! (until everyone I know watches this movie!!) <3

Well, those are my recommends. Now it’s your turn. What are you reading and/or watching for Create? I can’t wait to see what you come up with. Remember, you can share in the comments or in the group!
