How to Find Your Right People… An exercise

How do you know who your right people are?

First of all understand this… it can take some time and experimenting to really get a good handle on who they are. You may think they are one thing, play around with it for a while and realize it’s not quite right after all. Whatever you decide, try it on for a little bit before you make huge changes to your business cards, or your website. Feel it out and make sure it’s going to be exactly right. 🙂

Now.. on to finding your right people. Before we get started now’s a good time to set the kids up with a project or a *gasp* movie so you can have 15 minutes or so of silence relative quiet.

Ready?

Close your eyes. Picture your perfect customer in your head. If you already have customers go ahead and picture your very best customer… Male? Female? Mom? No kids? Young? Old? Positive? Pessimistic? Really get a picture of this person. (You may find this person looks very similar to YOU… I’m just saying).

Now think about how that person acts toward you, your products, and services. Do they pay on time? Do they balk at price? Do they pay you extra sometimes, just because? Do they send you thank you notes after you’ve helped them? Do they tell their friends about you and what you do? Do they rave about you on Twitter or Facebook?

Really get a feel for this ONE person.

Don’t worry, there’s more of this person out there, I promise.

Now that you have this person in your head, think about where they hang out. Who do they spend time with, where do they spend their time? Are they online a lot? Are they on twitter? Are they on facebook? Is there a forum or a community where they spend a lot of time?

With this information in hand it’s time to pull out a sheet of paper.

It’s time to write your best customer profile.

Make up a name for this best customer (or client), go into detail. What does this person look like? Where does she live? Do they have a family? How much money do they make? Where do they spend their time? Who do they hang out with? What are their hobbies, interests? What are they willing to pay money for?

Go ahead and write out the whole profile.

You may ask why this is important? Why is it necessary to even think about all of these details?

The better you know your very best customer the more you can cater your products, services, writing, content, freebies, facebook page to THEM, personally. When you start to speak directly, to one, very specific person it moves things. People who are similar to that person begin to hear you. You begin to CALL THEIR NAME.

When you call their name, they can raise their hand and say “Yes. That’s me. Yes. I need what you have.” and thus begins the snowball.

Take some time, to do the thinking and writing for this exercise… it will make a difference, and you’ll see it and feel it when you do.

I’d love to hear who your very best customer is… feel free to share in the comments.
