Fighting the Sony Handycam

December 17th, 2008

A few years back for vacation we bought this “great” sony handycam video recorder thing. It was supposed to be the best of the best. It records to these mini disks yada yada.

Funny thing how life changes.  I now need to make some quick videos for a new membership site, so I pulled out the handy dandy video recorder thinking I’ll just pop it on the tripod and away we’ll go.

Yeah, ok.

Well for one thing the software wasn’t installed. So I had to hunt through stacks of CDs looking for the right one, found it, installed it. Good to go. Nope.

I need to install macromedia flash player before the software will work.

Downloaded that, go to install ~ not enough space. What?

Good friend  shows me how to free up some space on my computer. Showing plenty of space available. Install flash again. Still not enough space.

Ok, forget the flash thing. Put the little CD in the tower and play. I’ll use Jing (one of my favorite little tools) to just copy the video as it goes, and I’ll hold the mic up to the speaker to grab the sound.

Hmmm… well that looks like it’s going to work, but then things go wonky, and it gets all out of whack.

Maybe camtasia will work?

Camtasia acts like it’s going to work, but tells me to turn off something I don’t know what or where is so the video will record correctly (probably the problem I had with Jing). Can’t find the thing it wants me to change, and when I go to capture the video it just comes up blank.

phew. Now it’s noon. Time for lunch, and then the rapid decline in “quiet time” the afternoon brings.

So I really want to finish this project, as it is actually a Christmas gift for someone, and it will need to cure for a couple days before I can grout it.

Ok take a deep breath, there must be a way.

It occurs to me that we will also be offering a PDF version of the instructions and I would like to have images to go with the pdf. Soooo, I decide to go ahead with the project and I just take stills all along the way.

So why is this at all important? Well my silly little story isn’t all that important at all, what is cool though is this:

I could have let any one of these little “roadblocks” stop me. I could have gotten frustrated (and a couple years ago would have), thrown my hands in the air and said forget it. Instead, I kept pushing through, looking at the problem differently, keep looking for a way to make it work.

I have to say since I have become a mom, it seems every day is a testament to my ability to rethink and re-solve. It’s like a never ending game of survivor around here, whether it’s work stuff, Hanna stuff and even wife stuff, I have had to become an almost totally different person. One who doesn’t give up.

Funny, I was watching some news show a week or so ago. It was about these kids who were adopted and became “too much” for their new parents to handle and they were sent away.

My husband made the comment that the things those kids got sent away for are the things my daughter does every day.

I sometimes wonder how/why I received a spirited kid. I’m sure there’s a reason she chose me, and I think I have become a much better person since I met her.

Here’s what I do know. Sometimes something knocks you down, (be that physically or mentally) and you have 2 choices. Stay down or Get up. I choose to get up.
